History of Varese

This Italian merchant steamship sunk in the North Adriatic while carrying cargo from Sfax, Tunisia to Venice, Italy.

Due to a heavy storm coming, capitan Carlo Mortola decided to take shelter in Pula's harbour. Sailing toward the harbour the ship ended in a minefield. The explosion blew the whole prow and the whole ship sunk immediately.Only one crew member survived. Varese was the oldest vessel of the Italian merchant navy.

At that time, Italy was still not at war with Austria, thus this tragedy is considered an accident and not a war casualty.

During the dive, it is possible to enter the wreck which is wide and safe throughout its entire lenght. The wreck lais in an upright position.
